^ alongside the manga I read already such as One Piece, Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family & Akane-Banashi

So yeah this top 10 has been a challenge for me more than the anime top 10.

I will save the honourable mentions til the end!

With that out of the way, let’s start the top 10 manga I have read so far this year!

10. Yamada & The Seven Witches (JP title Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo)

This story starts off as a body swap story but then introduces witches with other amazing powers.

It’s great but the series went on for way too long in my opinion, as the start and the end are perfect just the middle is dragged on for way too long.

So for this I prefer the anime as it’s just the start of the series before it gets complicated but misses the great ending the manga had. Plus the anime had this opening so ^

Still highly recommended, you might disagree with my placement

Edit: Going with “it went on too long” reasoning, I have changed the no.9 title which was going to be Liar Lily but that also dragged on for a bit, but not as much as Yamada

9. Madokta’s Secret

Yamada Madoka (♂) loves all sorts of cute things! He grew up playing with dolls, sleeping with stuffed animals, and wearing girl’s clothes that his sister made for him! The problem is, other people just don’t understand, so when Madoka’s family moves to a new city, he commits to acting like a boy at school. But what happens when his neighbor, Tanonaka Itsuki, finds out about his inclinations?!

Short & sweet with just adorable designs is how I describe this series, has got the cutest art work out of everything on this list, only downside it’s only 6 chapters!

The day this blog post goes live, I received the book physically (in Japanese not available in English). Expect a book review in a few weeks!

8. Shishunki Bitter Change

In stories of people who swap bodies, they always return to their rightful places. But what if that never happens? Unfortunately, this is the exact predicament Yui Ootsuka and Yuuta Kimura find themselves in.

One day, after Yuuta comes crashing down on Yui from the treetops, both children find themselves in an unfamiliar body. But no matter how desperately they try, they are unable to revert things to how they originally were. In the end, they settle with going about each other’s lives as if nothing had happened, determined to keep the incident a secret. Though merely classmates in the past, this inexplicable accident binds their fates tightly together.

For years, Yui and Yuuta struggle through a life that is not their own. In this wearisome situation, the two of them discover what it truly means to walk in someone else’s shoes.

from MyAnimelist

So many with the body swap stories I have read, it’s only a temporary thing, what happens if you are stuck in another person’s body for years such as til when school finishes?

This is what this manga series goes into, it’s not an easy thing to copy with especially when it’s the opposite gender that you are used to. Writing this is giving me the urge to read it all over again as it’s just 8 volumes.

It keeps you hooked from start to finish wondering when the two will finally swap back, but I won’t say how!

7. Stop!!! Hibari-kun

On her death bed, Kousaku Sakamoto’s mother tells him that after she dies, he should go to Tokyo where he’ll be taken care of by her friend Ibari Oozora and his family. Since his father died three years before and with no where else to go, Kousaku decides to go along with his mother’s last request. However, he soon discovers that Ibari is the boss of the Oozora Group mob ring. Uneasy about his predicament, he considers leaving, but he has second thoughts when he meets Ibari’s four daughters–Tsugumi, Tsubame, Suzume and Hibari–only to find out that Hibari is actually Ibari’s only son. Now Kousaku must not only cope with living among mobsters but also with refusing Hibari’s advances toward him.

1 of 2 comedic manga series on this list and this one features a transgender character!

Ok Hibari is never stated as such in the whole series but if you read it, you just know that the character is transgender and got to give it props for doing this in the 1980’s and this kind of sticks up 40 years later!

I have been a sucker for the art stye, as it reminds me of Akira Toriyama’s work (eg Dragonball) so I get like trans Bulma from this.

ONLY THING I dislike about the series is that the author just stopped doing the series for whatever reason, there is no conclusion in the manga or anime, but I can’t just help but love it for it’s story and comedy.

6. Life with an ordinary guy who reincarnated into a total fantasy knockout

I am so happy to be reading this while it is ongoing because it is one of the funniest series I have read this year.

I know what you are thinking “come on, another body swap story?!”, don’t worry this is the last one on the list.

The character, the story and the humour make up for it. If you want a laugh, check out this series or watch the anime.

5. My Crossdressing Senpai

Makoto Hanaoka, a womanly second-year student, easily attracts other people’s attention. First-year student Saki Aoi is no exception, and she falls in love with Makoto at first sight. Having a vibrant and vigorous personality, she does not hesitate to confess her feelings to her senior. However, Makoto differs significantly from the person Saki perceives: Makoto is not a girl, but rather a cross-dressing boy!

After revealing his well-known secret to Saki, Makoto expects her to be disgusted. Surprisingly, she is instead captivated by this revelation. Nonetheless, he still rejects her, but Saki’s determination does not stop her from declaring that she will become his first love. With Saki and his childhood friend at his side, Makoto’s world brightens, giving him strength amid his struggle between his interests and the expectations placed on him.

from MyAnimeList

I got so much joy out of this series, the confidence to be yourself at school but having to change before going home so your family doesn’t see it is something else. This is the only webtoon comic on this list, so no way of getting this physically which is a shame (edit: I am wrong, there are ways).

This series has a good romance to it, how it tackles the crossdressing and the reason why it was good. The ending was good too!

4. Boys Run The Riot

I’ve got a whole book review talking all about this series, so please read it.

The only series on this list that I read all physically, not read online and got all 4 volumes.

This was a great find & will always cherish this series.

3. Yakuza Reincarnation

Ryu may be getting on in his years, but the aging gangster is still hellbent on defending his turf when some young toughs ambush him and he wakes up in a fantasy world! Not only that, he’s in the body of this world’s princess! Is he the one that the ancient prophecy spoke of? Ryu might be out of place in this fantasy realm, but he may also be the only one who can save it!

from MyAnimelist

Another series on this list that is still ongoing.

The story, the main character and the artwork is why this is so high on my list. This can be swapped between the series in spot no.2 purely on it’s art work, heck I say it’s the best art work on this list but I have got enough reasons for the last 2 spots

Reminds me of Trigun but with a fantasy setting

I will say that Ryu is probably the best main character on this list, still got his male yakuza mindset, which is the reason why I love this character and the series.

Please check this series out if you love the fantasy genre and some Yakuza action!

2. Until I Become Me

A boy who used to be abusive to girls wakes up one day as one.

“I’ll go back being a boy soon,” he thought, however that was not the case. Follow Akira as he grows and learns little by little to accept the puzzling changings in her surroundings and her heart.

This series has been so hard for me to decide on where to put this on the list eg between this and Yakuza Reincarnation, the only thing the stories have got in common is that is a gender swap, everything else is different

This series has been a joy to read from start to where it is at the moment (as it’s ongoing). Similar to Shishunki Bitter Change but it’s just one person, only your parents and only a few teachers know that you used to be a boy due a gender swap disease.

How Akira has had to deal with this sudden change has been rather interesting, check out the story to find out more.

When I started this top 10, the author of this series was on a 3 month break and came back recently with a new chapter. It’s because of this new chapter (mainly the 2 pages I have shown above) that I have to change where I have put this amazing story!

The day this post goes live, I received the first 2 volumes of the manga physically in Japanese (not available physically in English, yet?). In a few more months I will buy the rest of the series so far!

  1. Wandering Son

Yes this won the top 10!

I’ve got a whole blog post posted last week which goes into why I love the series so much but in short, it reminds me of my childhood wishing the same thing. Almost jealous of the fictional character because shes went out in public dressed up years before I did.

The series goes into gender identity so might not be for everyone, but for someone who is transitioning this series means a lot to me.

It is the only thing on this list that is set in reality, so no sudden gender changes, no magic at work etc.

I have to say, compared to everything on this list, I have briefly read this story in the past but it’s only this year I have remembered about it to read it in full.

When I get my November 2024 Japan trip out of the way, I will hunt down the whole series physically!

Honourable mentions

I think I turned my best friend into a girl

Currently ongoing, the book is in the thumbnail.

A guy helping his friend be more confident in themselves with the power of make-up, this would have been no.11.

Shino Can’t Say Her Own Name

This would be no.12, got a book review all about it

The Bride Was A Boy

Same with Shino, got a book review

With that out of the way, this is the end of the post.

Thank you very much for reading this post and comment on your thoughts regarding my decisions 🙂
